Spare Time

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

Now that I’m definitely out of school (though not technically with a degree… yet), and my wife is starting to work some long hours, I’m feeling the need for something to fill up my time at home.  Choices are limited, as:

  1. It’s really cold outside; and
  2. I have to keep watch over doggus

I’ve been convincing myself that it’s OK to do things in my free time that are totally unrelated to professional development while at the same time avoiding being sucked back into the black hole of computer games.  Current top candidates are:

  • Working with OpenLayers: like Google Maps, but open source and can integrate with MapServer;
  • Mess with the sweet toy my wife got me for Zappadan;
  • Get back into reading a bit more, especially formal logic and maybe try to catch up a bit on popular fiction.

The problem with all of these activities is that they involve sitting around, an activity in which I engage all day long at work and see no reason to extend.  I’m thinking I should take up blacksmithing.  Downside – not many people to learn from, expensive to get started.

Must keep in mind – there are far worse things than not knowing what to do with free time.
